Z1 HISTORY
The Z1 is a practical bike too, being just as reliable as ever and with a fine supply of parts – many provided by Kawasaki’s original suppliers. The only downside is the price. The Z1’s virtues are widely recognized and therefore expect to pay an eye-watering $20,000 for a really stunning Z1, Z1A or Z1B. Riding a Z1 today is still a wonderful experience – right at the top of the classic bike tree. With modern tires and decent rear dampers, the bike’s handling is transformed and the big Kwack will waft effortlessly up to 80 mph on a whiff of throttle and cruise there all day long. But the Kawasaki was far more than just a pretty face. The engineering was exemplary and clever too. Everything except really major maintenance could be done with the engine in the frame. The motor might have been DOHC, normally the realm of GP racers of the day, but it was simple and totally unbreakable in even hard use.Kawasaki cut no corners in terms of the engine. The all roller bearing crankshaft was made up of nine individual components and was over-engineered even for racing. The eight-plate clutch was huge and unbreakable and the pinions in the five-speed gearbox massive. Little wonder then, that these engines are still raced today. Honda’s legendary four-cylinder CB750 may have started the fire, but when Kawasaki’s twin-cam Z1 came on the scene the Japanese Superbike wars heated up fast.
1973 Kawasaki Z1: King of the Road
The Kawasaki Z1 was 900cc of pure power and precision
Years produced: 1973 1974 1975Total production: 85,000 (est.)Claimed power: 82hp @ 8,500rpm (factory)Top speed: 120mph (period test)Engine type: 903cc air-cooled, in-line four-cylinderWeight (wet): 246kg (542lb)MPG: 43 (average)
In September 1972, the Z1 was introduced to the U.S. public, and sales started in November of that year. Since the development stage, Z1 was nicknamed “The New York Steak,” and the Z1 was enthusiastically welcomed by markets as the “mouth watering motorcycle” when sales started. The 900cc class body size and the DOHC engine attracted Japanese riders all at once because motorcycle equipped with a DOHC engine had not existed in Japan prior to the Z2.During the first two years of production, Kawasaki built 80,000 Z1 and Z2 motorcycles, and the sales of these models established Kawasaki’s reputation as a heavy weight motorcycle manufacturer.
