1954 American Classic Motors Servi-cycle
The 1954 Simplex Servi-Cycle MotorcycleBEFORE MAKING ANY BIDS, BE SURE AND READ THIS AUCTION COMPLETELY, TO MAKE SURE, THERE ARE NO MISUNDERSTANDINGSUp for auction is an original and rare motorcycle that has been lovingly put back into working condition. This is a 1954 Simplex Servi-Cycle Motorcycle Model M. The tear down and re assembly of this Motorcycle, would not have been possible with out the help and guidance of one of the most prominent and noted Simplex Motorcycle specialists, Wayne Mahaffey. The engine was sent to Wayne and he personally rebuilt the engine to factory specs and had it running and tested it before it was sent back to us to install back into the motorcycle frame. You can see in one of the pictures, the condition that the Motorcycle was in, it was originally blue, and didn’t run, but you can see it was a complete bike to be able to start getting it fixed up and put back on the road. It was carefully taken apart, we kept every nut and bolt to make sure we always had the right parts. What parts we needed we got from Wayne. From nuts and bolts to spokes, Wayne had it all. There are some bolts that were original and working, however, they were not painted due to their function on the bike. Only some surface rust is noted, on some smaller components, as they were functioning, but there were no replacements. The frame was painted powder coated black and the wheels were painted powder coated cream. Custom brass fittings were added to the exhaust pipes. We did our best to make sure we kept it as authentic as possible. We have not started the engine since it was re installed in the bike, since, it was on display for awhile. As we mentioned, Wayne had it running before it was installed on the bike. This is a beautiful Motorcycle and as complete and close to it was originally as you can get. We think you will agree, that this is a very nice collector’s item and works. We have all the receipts for the what we spent on the Bike, along with letters and correspondence with Wayne, even a 160 page parts catalog, along with some old ads for the bike all will come with the bike and go to the new owner. One special note, titles were never issued for these bikes back in those days, so there is no title. You would have to check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles, if you were to have a title made for it.Wayne made mention, that if the motorcycle had a missing motor, it would cost about $2,000.00, alone, just to try and find one to rebuild and install to make it original, lucky this motorcycle had all the original parts on it.The Simplex Motorcycle
Simplex Company was founded by Paul Treen in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the
late 1920’s. Treen had been a
Harley-Davidson Motorcycle dealer for some time and had pitched the idea to
make a lightweight motorcycle for younger riders. When Harley-Davidson rejected
the idea, Treen decided to enter the market himself and designed his Servi-Cycle.
The first Simplex Servi-Cycle Motorcycle was
produced in 1935. The name was derived from the fact that it was built with simplicity
in mind. The 125-cc two stroke engine incorporated a rotary valve which sends
the power to the rear wheel through a
direct drive arrangement, an automatic clutch and variable speed transmission,
of course ahead of it’s time, and because of it’s lightweight, averaged about
100 miles per gallon. The Servo-Cycle used a magneto of Simplex’s own design,
providing 6 volt electricity for the dual ignition and for the headlight,
taillight and stop light. The engine had dual spark plugs in its cylinder head.
The Simplex was touted as the safest motorcycle on the road.
Simplex Motorcycle Company made little changes to the Simplex since 1935, so
their designs, to some, looked primitive by 1950’s standards and so customers looked to other
brands with significant improvements for the day. The production of the Simplex
Motorcycle ceased by 1960.
