1936 Harley-davidson Knucklehead Motor

$ 40,400

Description

I bought this 1940 EL Knucklehead in January 2011 from John William McDonald. (See picture of him in 1948 on this bike) He blew the engine up in Memphis Tennessee in 1952. He lived in a trailer at the time and bought a complete 1936 Harley Knucklehead for $100 from W. N. Presley, 517 Bon Air St, Memphis TN (See notarized bill of sale.) John installed the 1936 engine into this 1940 bike and threw away the rest of the 1936 bike. This is one of the last 1936 (EL#2658) engines made, has matching belly (case) numbers and has been completely overhauled. Both cylinder heads have the short reinforcement ribs V rocker brackets. The engine has been modified for the 38-47 type rocker shaft covers and has original four-fin cylinders. M-5 carburetor was rebuilt. Has original parts, tanks, emblems, fenders, headlight, 9 bolt horn and all pre-war brass covered chrome trim (front wing-tip trim, front & rear trim, horn cover, headlight bucket). The seat is leather covered horse hair. (All of the old pictures of John on the bike are on display at the Kansas Motorcycle Museum in Marquette KS.) The HARLY tag has been registered in Kansas for many years before I bought it. This bike has a fascinating history. John got his engineering degree in Mexico City, Mexico and this was his only method of transportation. He bought the bike in the early ’40s which would make me the 3rd owner. The bike is being sold as is, where is, with no warranties implied or expressed.Buyer is responsible for motorcycle pick-up or arranging shipping. Look carefully at the pictures and ask for more, or ask questions, as we DO NOT ACCEPT RETURNS. Sorry about the re-list. I lost internet connection when I submitted the item for listing; then when I got internet back and re-submitted it dropped my reserve price.

On May-11-17 at 00:03:41 PDT, seller added the following information:

I was asked some good questions and I’ll add the information here… the case has not been welded on. Very rare, clean engine. The dive boards on both cylinder heads have never been broken or welded on.
