This is a fascinating, completely hand made, one of a kind steam motorcycle. I believe it was built in the 40′s by an aviation mechanic in California named Fred Hensel. And has been titled in that state as a hand built motorcycle. It is the ultimate in “steampunk” and all who see are in awe. This would be a big attraction at your museum, or private collection, and has never been on display, anywhere. It is not getting the attention it deserves in my small collection. It has to be seen to fully understand what a mechanical work of art it is. It has rack and pinion steering, a 2-part fold-up steering column, which folds up, and away, for entry into the vehicle.
You could write a book on all of the insane engineering that went into this.
The detail and craftsmanship that this man put into this is mind boggling.
Anything that could me made by hand, was. He even made the door handles and hinges instead of using existing ones, as an example. It appears to have been made, or started in the 40-50′s, judging by the age of the wheels, however the registrations I have are from the the 60′s. Amazing that he was able to title this creation. And I wouldn’t be surprised if it took him 20 years to build it. I had some steam guys look it over and it was figured out that it burned “solid fuel” wood, coal, zombies, anything, would be burned to make the steam. The ultimate apocalypse vehicle. We ran it on compressed air, and it went along nicely. I have a few pages of notes from the steam guys assessment of it’s functionality. It is complete, to the best of my knowledge, and as-found. Just sitting in this crazy thing and taking it all in is a thrill.
His aviation skills are apparent everywhere, with the use of aviation aluminum and techniques in construction.
Truly unique, and made with a high level of skill, one thing is for sure, you will never see another one.
